On Friday 28th September 2018, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck the island of Sulawesi, Indonesia It is believed that the earthquake set off an underwater landslide which in turn triggered a Tsunami. By the time the waves reached land they had reached heights of 6-metres and were travelling at speeds of over 400mph.
Tens of thousands of homes along the coastline have been destroyed and entire communities have been decimated. Damage to communication infrastructure meant the full picture has been slow to emerge, though it is now known that more than 1,400 are dead and 200,000 survivors are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Up to 1.5 million people in the region are expected to have been affected.
The Foundation made a grant to assist the DEC respond to the growing needs of these people, but they need more money to help reduce the scale and severity of the crisis an help rebuild shattered communities..
